Tips for Writing a Great Essay

Write in first person – use personal and recent examples. This is your opportunity to show what is unique about you. Focus on how an experience made you feel; changed the way you think; prompted you to act.

Strong words make a strong essay. Think about experiences that demonstrate leadership, engage a cause or passion, express commitment.

Resist any urge to submit a paper that you have written for another purpose; it is not a college application essay.

There are no bad topics; just some that are stronger than others. Be strategic – select a topic that shows your skills and talents. Explain why you would be a great fit and an asset to this university.

Humor is great one on one, but it is risky in the college application essay. Your attempts to be clever should be saved for the interview.
